Hi all,
A very quick start to this year's CSD! Team is busy recording sessions @UN Radio, sitting in on plenary sessions, side events, preparing tomorrow's Outreach...lots to do, but loads of excitement!

China's Emission Targets

With news today that China may now set emission targets (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/19/china-environment-kyoto) does this mean their is hope for a Global deal in Copenhagen?

I certainly hope so, true Sustainable Development which achieves a lasting future for generations can only come about when all societies realise that we have a global interest in a common future. Emissions at the local and national level affect the local and national but also the common global environment.

China's is expected to be the largest emitter of carbon in the coming years, and this is being fuelled by unsustainable consumption, and China supplying goods both to Western societies and the rising middle classes within China itself. Large cuts are needed within Western societies, both to lead the way, but also to admit that we have had the biggest impact on the environment.

With a combination of a cut/emission targets from Western Societies and also China maybe we are on the way towards true Global Environmental Governance
